Thank you for this summary; I did buy the book as a result.

I know it is brash, but I would like to request that you do the same type of summary for WHY WE GET FAT....

IF you ever have time. The points are often similar but the presentation is briefer and more easily absorbed.

I am a Certified Diabetes Educator (in Mexico) and along with Dr. Richard K. Bernstein's take on the low-carb lifestyle for persons with diabetes, Taubes' book and your notes have really eased my explanations and questions to patients. I tell them to use their own experience (with measures of blood sugar levels) to decide for themselves if it works or not to produce more "normal" metabolism. Those who try, are rewarded in 99% of the cases with blood sugar levels and lack of food cravings like they have not seen before.

Best wishes to you!

thank you so much for this brief. I have read the book in its entirety. currently listening to the audiobook version. have also read and listened to his current book (Why you are Fat...). Mr. Taubes really should be given some national award for his years of research into food consumption and r hhealth. Thank you again for your hard work.

Well, it's over a year now and they haven't contacted me, so I guess they figure it's at least not hurting sales and maybe even helping them on net.

I think it's a bad move on the side of the publishers to ask for this to be removed. After skimming your notes, I am headed to Amazon to snag up a copy of the book - which I would have never known existed if it weren't for this blog post.

You'd be safe eating bad carbs only seldomly. As for other carbs, if you're healthy you can handle good carbs as much as you want: bananas, yams, potatoes (peeled), etc.

After reading this article, I am now scared to eat any Carbohydrates! I know the limits and that it is not saying to never eat carbs, but nonetheless, whenever I head to the grocery store, I will second guess everything that I buy. I do have one question, however. What if after returning your cells to normal insulin non-resistance, is it bad to eat carbs ever again? I understand that Taubes probably says yes, but I think that is completely unrealistic. Also, as I understand it, the carbohydrates he is referring to, are the processed ones that we see so often in sodas, and now most everything in the grocery store. So how can we be expected to never take a sip of a delicious coca-cola again? Why not have a can for a celebration of some sort and only make that a once in a several month occasion. I do not think your cells will return to that insulin resistance once those bad carbs enter your system.

Ha ha, I agree. It's great that a hardcore vegan went paleo, but too bad she didn't challenge her underlying worldview (radical feminist environmentalist). It's a great book for saving people from vegetarianism because she shows that their own premises lead to paleo, not to grain and agriculture. I don't think notes are even necessary for this one. Her 3 main arguments (moral, political, nutritional) are pretty straightforward and could be summarized in a few lines. The reviews by paleo bloggers already do a good job.

Great work, thanks.

I read the book, and this is a very helpful reminder/review.

Now get to work on "The Vegetarian Myth" ;-)
